New traditions

You know that Blogtoberfest is over when it takes me thirteen days to get around to writing about our Halloween celebrations.

Yes, Halloween is over, the decorations are packed away and all the lollies have been eaten, but I still wanted to write this post. What stuck me most about this Halloween was the community spirit that I found - Right here under my nose!

I know that there are mixed feelings about Halloween, "too commercial" "so American" were expressions I heard leading up to Halloween. But as I mother, I found this night to be an amazing opportunity for my children to dress up and have fun. They joined their friends and met some of our nearest neighbours for the first time. What other time of the year do they get to do that? There are no longer fancy dress balls (the highlight of my primary school years) or street festivals. We are lucky that our small local Christmas Carols are growing bigger each year, but when I was a child we we closed the street and had a good old fashioned street carnival with rides, turkey raffles and the freedom to join friends and run around eating food you usually weren't allowed to eat.

Just a few weeks ago, while at a play date, I wondered out loud, if anyone else found it hard to feel part of a community in the area that we lived. It was unanimous. Everyone at the table said that this was the first year that they had even started to make any friends (I have felt that way too) I have lived here for seven years, others have lived in the area for 11 and 14 years!

As I walked around with the children and the other mum's, that I am just starting to get to know, I realised that this is what we all needed. The mums, the kids, our community. We live in a world of closed doors. I have only spoken to my neighbour twice in a year. When he moved in, we approached him in the driveway to introduce ourselves and I think he got the shock of his life. I discovered so many lovely, giving people, happily greeting the kids at the doors with bowls full of lollies and chocolates. For the first time in a long time, I felt, on that night, part of a community. And it was all good.

Who really cares what Halloween means anyway!

This year, things were a little different. Last year I had promised the kids that they could trick or treat.

The day before Halloween, in between a doctors appointment and a teachers interview, I made a quick stop at Sam's Warehouse (some days, somethings got to give) Without too much thought I bought 2 x $1.00 red (plastic) capes. The initial costume requests were a red devil with a tulle skirt and wings and a zombie covered with snakes and spiders, I was grateful to find the kids very adaptable in the costume department. They were happy: it was Halloween and they would be joining their friends for trick or treating. That was really all that mattered.

Anyway, they thought they looked pretty scary.

On Halloween morning, before yet another appointment with the school, I cooked bat wings (chicken wings) and goblin face pies served with blood (tomato sauce). Because we would be trick or treating this year I was playing down the spooky food. Instead of our usual feast, it was to be a snack, eaten after our trick or treating. Also on the menu, was moldy cheese, deep fried mice brains (popcorn) and witches wee (orange juice)

Spunky Monkey had two of his friends join us at the house, with arrangements made to meet Miss Moo Moo's friends down the road. Her prep class was right into it, a few of them had done the spooky food parties, just like us, last year and the year before.

Trick or treating was straight away FUN!

And it just got better.

Our small group of 5 set off, knocking on door after door without fear. Everyone one was so receptive. With the trick or treat bags starting to get full we caught up with Miss Moo Moo's friends about half and hour later. Our group of 5 turned into about 25 kids. Pure chaos, but of the very best kind.

We walked a few more streets and then we turned into our street, I was laughing at the spectacle of it all, then I turned and looked behind me.

Oh my - where was I?

Our street had been transformed into a Halloween Street Festival.

Ghosts, skeletons, goblins, witches, devils, ghouls, pumpkin heads, monsters, dead princesses, black cats and superhero's blocked the road, darting this this way and that, from this house to that and the next and the next. There were squeals and laughter and happy chatter. So many friendly faces happily opening there doors and getting into the fun of it all. Mums, dad's, grandparents and babies.

As we got closer to home, we discovered a few friends had even transformed there garages into spooky Halloween caves! After an hour and a half it was time to call it quits. It was hard work getting our kids inside and leaving such a festive atmosphere.

Back at home, the craziness continued, Spunky Monkeys friends stayed, but it was only the parents who ate anything. Heaps of scary people came to our door to collect their treats, until we ran out, I turned of the lights and shut the door at 9:00pm. We walked outside to say goodnight to our guests, there was a few stragglers in the street, mainly teenagers, have you ever seen a mummy on a skateboard? After waving goodbye, I turned and saw the moon. It was full, with an eerie yellow glow that I hadn't seen before. It was the most perfect Halloween moon. I stood for a while on the front lawn staring, I half expected to see the silhouette of a witch on a broomstick pass before it.

But alas... one never did.

Happy Halloween

Too busy to blog today.

It's Halloween, you know. The monkeys have been counting down the days.

I have been out most of this week with appointments and meetings, so today there is some last minute Halloween happenings around here.

Cooking spooky food and decorating.

Tonight - trick or treating for the first time. In our area, it gets a little CRAZY.

It should be fun.

Last day of Blogtoberfest! - I did it!

Our week

Monday

This is the second year that we have celebrated Halloween in our house. It was CRAZY! We had friends over for dinner, who were happy to join in the madness (or so they say). There were so many Trick or Treaters at our door that it took over half and hour to get the food from the oven to the table. In the end, I had the guests handing out the Halloween lollies, just so we could sit down to eat.

And then came the tears.

Spunky Monkey had wanted to go Treat or Treating. We had already invited our friends over for dinner, so I had told him that we would go next year. But as soon as he saw some of his school friends at our door. That was the end!!! I won't go into it here, but lets just say he was very upset.

Like I said, the night was crazy. Fun, but exhausting. I know now, what things I will do differently for next year, as I had written last year, "I guess we will work out what best suits our family for this new tradition as time goes on."

So much for my final day of Blogtoberfest. As soon as we had tucked the little monkey monsters into bed, I, myself fell (literally fell) into bed. Blogtoberfest forgotten.

Tuesday

Miss Moo Moo and I went to a friends house for lunch and to watch the Melbourne Cup. We had so much fun chatting, drinking champagne and eating (way to much) yummy food, that we forgot to turn on the race - Opps!

Wednesday

I was the Kindy mum on roster. This will be my last time (ever) that I will be helping out at Kindy and it's a little sad. A bit of a wake up call too, the school term is almost over and next year 'my baby' will be starting school. Where have the last five years gone?

Thursday

Grocery shopping, washing and baking. Grandma came for afternoon tea and left with a pile of fabric to make Miss Moo Moo some summer dresses. We also went to the library.

Today

I have written out my Christmas presents list and have been doing a bit of on-line window shopping. I might have some lunch now and curl up with this book until school pick up

I hope you have a great week too.

Our first Halloween

After tonight, I promise, no more posts about Halloween!

It was a few days of happy chaos, but we made it to our first Halloween. It was lots of fun, but also strange at the same time, as this is something very new to us.

The kids had soooo much fun, choosing costumes, discussing what spooky food to cook and decorating the house. We read spooky stories by candlelight and night after night was spent in the dark bedroom, with glowing fang teeth and glowing ghosts. There was hiding in cupboards and scaring one another. There was a lot happy screaming and laughter.

The biggest surprise was probably the Trick or Treaters, of which, there were many. Two years ago, three little ghosts knocked on our door and asked, "trick or treat?". I had to turn them away empty handed. Then last year we had two groups of children come to our door. I think I broke a couple of chocolate bars in half to give to them. So, I was prepared this year and stocked up with spooky bites, dead pirates loot and blood sucker lollipops. I think I lost count at 15 knocks at the door. I couldn't believe it! And I am not talking about two or three kids at the door, I'm talking about a mob!

So, it seems, we are well on the way to celebrating Halloween in this country, like it or not.

We did like it. It was a bit of fun. The one thing that I can't get my head around is the trick or treat thing (for my own kids). I guess we will work out what best suits our family for this new tradition as time goes on.

Boo!

(this image is from here)

"Boo" said Boo, has he popped his head up out of the jack-o-lantern, where he had been hiding.

"Oh Boo, your scared me" said Belle. " I've been looking for you everywhere. I wanted to wish you a Happy Halloween"

I think you already know, I'm a huge fan of Mandy's beautiful illustrations. This drawing captures a very beautiful kind of Halloween. I love it.

We have had our spooky pancakes this morning (filled with blood and toad poo) and I am just taking a quick tea break before heading back into the kitchen to make slime pie and mud cake.

I hope you have a very smooky All Hallow's Eve.

(Spunky Monkey has been saying smooky, instead spooky all week. Too cute! Now I am saying it too.)

The pumpkin has been carved

Yesterday morning, Spunky Monkey, (the official events coordinator), had everyone up very early, so Mr Moo could carve the pumpkin.

It was really fun, despite being 5:45 am. It's so wonderful to get caught up in all of the children's excitement and carving the pumpkin was a lot easier than I anticipated.

I had to remind Mr Moo, more than once, that we were carving a happy kind of pumpkin. He desperately wanted to go all out SCARY!

Jack, the lantern

The first and only jack-o-lantern I have ever had, was carved by the chef that I worked with when I lived in London many years ago. I took it home to our house where he sat grinning for a week. The many friends who came and went that week, affectionately called him Jack.

"Hi Jack", they would say as they walked past, and gave him a little pat on the head.

or

"Jack, you scared me!"

Yesterday we bought our first ever carving pumpkin. We are more than ready to start a new tradition in this family. Miss Moo Moo is already hiding around corners and under tables, scaring the bejeebers out of me. She is also walking about the house under blankets and sheets being spooky.

People in Australia, have only started celebrating Halloween in recent years. It is hard to set new traditions for a something that you have never celebrated before. I guess we'll start by carving our pumpkin and make up the rest as we go along. Over the coming years we will find what fits best for our family on Halloween. I'd say it will have something to do with dressing up, scary stories and spooky food.
