Vintage linens

I hadn't been able to find any vintage sheets in my local op shops for months. I admit, I was hoping to find something new on my travels interstate.

However nothing could have prepared me for the bounty I came home with. In fact, when I laid it all out I felt a little giddy. So much! Too much?

18 sheets and 14 pillowcases.

While there were many bargains to be had, I must also thank Mrs Gooseberry, who gave me some of her stash. Thank-you, thank-you.

Also uncovered in the linen section of the many op shops I visited, were:

3 doilies
3 table runners
1 set of place mats
1 set of napkins
1 souvenir tea towel
3 tablecloths

and 1 pot holder. Love this.

Have you had any good finds lately?

Go here, to see who else will be blogging daily for Blogtoberfest.

    1. Thanks Zara, I really hadn't realised I had bought so much until I got home. It was quiet a shock.

I have been wanting some pinks, I never ever find them. This one was a scrap from Karen:)

  2. What do you do with the doilies and table runners? I have boxes and boxes that my grandmother made - she even crocheted the lovely edges to the runners. There are berries and butterflies, flowers, flowers, flowers and one amazing blue peacock!! I love them, but don't know what do do with them. I put the peacock over the back of my blue rocker in our newborn daughter's room (it looked so lovely with the plush blue rocker fabric), but what can I do with the rest?

    1. Sorry I have taken so long to respond to your wonderful comment. Firstly, Wow! You are so lucky!!!! I'm a little envious. I had only a couple of things from my grandmother and none of them were in very good condition. I have been collecting old linens forever, usually only at thrift shops. I stopped for a while because, like you, I wasn’t sure what to do with them all? But then a few years ago I started again, just now and then, if the price is right or if it is a design that I’ve not seen before.

I recently made a bunting out of all of the ones that were damaged (frayed, holes, stained) I will try and post a photo of this sometime soon. But others I definitely don’t want to cut up! Some are put aside to go on cushions and some I want to sew on clothes for my daughter. I have only recently started using them around the house for small displays, with a little vase of flowers or a book. One went onto my daughters dressing table and others I am using on my breakfast table tray or as runners for the centre of my dining table. Many will stay in the cupboard until I find the right use. It is such a wonderful feeling to see them out on display, while I don’t know who made them, someone did, someone special took the time to sit and either embroider or crochet or both! Someone turned a plain piece of fabric into something to treasure.

I’ll be sorting through and tiding up my vintage linen early in the new year. Because we haven’t used any of my lovely tablecloths for a long time (because of having little children) they are starting to yellow. I want to wash them and learn how to store them better, I also want to see exactly what I have hiding in there and see how some more of it can come out for display. But that is next year, unfortunately at the moment my main focus is Christmas and school holiday fun!

I’m sure you will find the right pace for your treasures in time. xo

  3. Oh, and she did scads of embroidered pillow-cases, hankies and tea towels too. I've saved everything my mother sent me after my grandmother passed away and love them, but don't know what to do with them.
